Serving Global Players in China
Thanks to China's rise as an economic powerhouse, coupled with its emerging middle class, the country is undoubtedly a critical market for global players in virtually every industry. Companies from all over the world have invested heavily in China.
When these global players enter the Chinese market they face a distinctive set of challenges, including, for example, a complex regulatory environment, a diverse consumer base spread over a large geography, weak protection of intellectual property; and increasing competition from local competitors.
With a presence in the Greater China region extending back to the early 1980s, BCG has helped many global clients take on these and other business problems in China, both as they evaluate and enter the market, and as they build and defend leading positions.
As most of the largest global companies already have a significant presence in China and have operated here for many years, the majority of BCG's projects involve helping our clients expand their existing capabilities in China:
- In many cases, companies ask BCG to support them with the development of China strategies: for example to better leverage geographical differences, to find the right way of working with the Chinese government or to be faster than their competitors
- Often companies want to bring their sales and distribution capabilities to the next level: for example, by expanding their coverage of the Chinese market, by further developing their distributor network, or by strengthening their brand. In such cases, BCG can support our clients by leveraging our wealth of experience from diverse industries
- In other cases, companies are increasingly concerned about local competition in and from China. Often BCG is asked to analyze the competitive situation and work on strategies to counter any threats
- Operational excellence also plays a large role in the China operations of successful multinationals: the further growth of sourcing capabilities, the constant cost reduction in local factories, and the buildup of effective R&D organizations are examples of the ways in which BCG helps its multinational clients enhance their competitiveness in China.
