Identify Opportunities Arising from Technology Convergence
A leading Taiwanese telecom operator with diverse assets in fixed and mobile communications, as well as in Internet and media businesses, recognized potential advantages in the convergence of all these varied technologies. The client asked BCG to help it prepare a strategy for identifying and exploiting these advantages. Specifically, the company wanted to know how to bundle its numerous product offerings to consumers and enterprises, how to leverage convergence across technical networks, and how to organize itself to most effectively capitalize on the benefits of technology convergence.
ApproachAfter conducting a comprehensive analysis of the Taiwanese telecom and media markets and their future development, our BCG team benchmarked the successfully “converged” business models of similar players across the globe. We then developed a new customer segmentation plan for the client. For each segment, we identified the key products that would generate additional revenues and the efficiency potential of each product across the client’s network and throughout its operations. A modeling of different scenarios helped us explore different strategies in detail.
Impact and value createdBased on BCG’s recommendations, the client changed the organizational setup of its units and strengthened the customer orientation of its businesses. These changes enabled it to achieve large cost synergies and significantly increased its competitiveness.
