Training Program

    Personal Growth Stories

Our training curriculum is carefully designed to ensure that individuals' skills development keeps pace with their tenure at BCG. Local, regional and global training is arranged by cohort to enable our consultants to deal with the most essential issues at different stages of their careers, and to provide them with opportunities to share experiences and build networks.

  • Greater China training

Our local program is designed by a dedicated training team who are experienced consultants and truly understands consultants’ needs in training. All new hires begin their journeys in BCG with a two-week orientation program. Trainers share their valuable consulting experience with the new hires, equip them with the essential consulting skills and highlight the key issues they may encounter during the early part of the consulting career. The program ends with a case simulation which is inspired by a real business problem in Greater China. New associates and consultants work in team to tackle the problem and present their findings to the managers.

Orientation training is only the starting point of learning in BCG Greater China. We have an active associate learning group in which experienced project leaders and principals help associates develop the essential consulting skills. The Associates also are in constant discussion with the training team to develop new training materials to meet the evolving training needs of the Associates. Newly promoted consulting staffs also receive trainings which aim at equipping them with the skills they need to succeed in their new roles. Furthermore, our Greater China offices organize a Home Office Day every month, in which experts from different practice areas would introduce their focus areas and discuss their specific case experience with others.

  • Regional training

Our regional training program complements the local program to facilitate the learning of our consulting staffs. It is overseen by a partner and managed by our regional training manager. Following orientation in their local offices, new recruits in Asia Pacific region convene for a week-long regional orientation program in Sydney, Bangkok or Singapore. Like our local program, the regional training program is very intensive, and that is why regional orientation was originally known as 'boot camp'. But the days of intensive learning are now balanced by nights of intensive fun, in which new hires in the region get to know each other over drinks at dinner, shopping, or even a round of Go-Kart. For the last few days of this program, new hires participate in a simulated case that provides a fun and challenging introduction to the project team environment.

Regional trainings are tailor-made for different cohorts. Associates and consultants trainings focus on the consulting skills development, while those for project leaders and principals focus on case management. Learning is non-stop in BCG, even our partners can benefit from our leadership and commercial skills training programs.

  • Global training

With a strong global presence, BCG understands that learning should not be constrained by geographical borders. We offer many global level training programs in which consultants from different offices can share their local experiences with others. For example, BCG offers a Business Essentials Program to consultants with non-traditional backgrounds (e.g. PhD, JD, MD) to facilitate their transition to business world. There are also worldwide trainings for project leaders and principals. In addition, our practice groups also organize annual conferences on industry-specific topics.

  • e-Learning

BCG knows that formal in-class trainings may not be always possible for everyone given our schedules and travel needs. Therefore, we have developed some excellent e-learning material to supplement classroom training. This is especially useful for associates/consultants during their first year. For example, new hires who have limited background in business are invited to participate in our Finance Online Training for 6 weeks, where they learn the essential skills in Accounting and Finance. Basic analytical skills can be developed through our interactive 'eModules'. In addition, ‘on-demand’ training is available through a number of interactive 'ePrimers' on a broad range of topics. Every two weeks, ‘virtual classrooms’ led by topic experts from all Practice Areas around the world bring the latest ideas and breakthroughs to our consultants’ doorsteps. BCG also offers a training library of self-study videos, books and CDs, as well as a range of materials on our global Knowledge Management database.

Learning 'on the job'

At BCG, the most powerful learning invariably happens on the job. New recruits work closely with experienced BCG and client team members. Our apprenticeship model and focus on people development have been instrumental to our success in Greater China. The Project Leader, Principal, and Partner provide experience and direction for the project team. They are also expected to develop individuals, ensuring that each consultant has both the resources and the opportunity to learn new skills. In addition, the diverse experiences and backgrounds of fellow team members provide a rich source for learning.

You can read some stories from around our offices to get a sense, in the words of our staff, of the amount of learning that takes place on the job.

Your learning at BCG is limited only by your own motivation.
