The Boston Consulting Group Tops List of Best Consultants in China
Three BCG Partners—More Partners Than at Any Other Firm—Are Named in the First-Ever Survey of the Country’s ‘Top 10 Consultants’
SHANGHAI, May 15, 2009—Three partners at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG)—more partners than at any other firm—are among the "Top 10 Consultants" in China, according to a new survey of 270 local business executives, editors, and consulting professionals.
In addition, the survey identified BCG as one of the top three strategy consulting firms in China.
"As one of the earliest international firms to enter the China market, BCG has been working for companies in China for over 15 years," said Ronghui En, editor-in-chief of Business Management Review, one of the survey organizers. “BCG has the deepest understanding of the Chinese market, it has brought the most advanced methodologies and management tools, and it has applied them to China’s unique context.”
She continued: "Backed by its continuous study of the Chinese market and its profound understanding of Chinese consumers, BCG has been providing the most innovative consulting services to help Chinese companies sustain growth and has gained the trust of many senior executives."
Business Management Review, in cooperation with other media outlets, initiated the survey to discover the best consulting firms and the top individual consultants in the country.
A committee of 20 chief editors from leading Chinese media solicited nominations and distributed the survey to corporate executives, industry associations, editors, consulting firms, and individual consultants. The survey covered questions about the impact of the firm’s advice on Chinese companies and its social responsibility activities. The committee also conducted interviews with 37 locally based senior executives to gain further insights into the nominees. A third-party research institute analyzed the data.
BCG’s three consultants to make the best-consultants list were:
- David Michael, a Beijing-based senior partner and the head of BCG’s Greater China practice. Mr. Michael serves a range of global and Chinese clients in the technology and energy sectors.
- John Wong, a Hong Kong-based senior partner and the chairman of BCG’s Asia-Pacific region. Mr. Wong is active in the firm’s Health Care and Consumer practices.
- Hubert Hsu, a Hong Kong-based senior partner who manages the firm’s Consumer practice in Asia.
BCG was also among the top strategy consulting firms.
"We are honored to be recognized in this manner," said Mr. Michael. "The award reflects two decades of sustained commitment to developing our China practice."
Mr. Michael noted that because China is a strategic market for virtually all of BCG’s key global clients, the firm’s China-based consultants collaborate closely with colleagues around the world to help client companies win in the Chinese market.
BCG tries to differentiate itself, he added, in how it works with local Chinese clients. "Chinese corporations have unique characteristics and needs," he explained. "Deep local expertise is essential in order to bring about constructive change in such organizations, and we have unparalleled experience there."
