Taming the Tiger: New Realities of Doing Business in China’s Year of the Tiger

2010 will probably be more about steadiness than about shocks in China. Most of the macroeconomic shifts will likely be less dramatic than feared. Chinese government is directing the economy toward a new, long-term growth model. It has chosen "innovation" as one of its guiding principles, and is even more actively shaping industries which it considers relevant to China's development. In this new business environment, MNCs will have to adopt a new mindset and management agenda to remain competitive. This white paper discusses four priorities that MNCs must focus on when they drive a new "innovation-oriented" China strategy: deepening the understanding of customers in China; constant expansion of the market footprint; further localization, especially product management, product design and R&D; and further investments in local talent.
